Referrals

Referrals are not required to see a psychologist. However, if you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP; please see below) you will be eligible for the Medicare rebate.

Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)

If you have a MHCP from a GP or psychiatrist you are eligible for the Medicare rebate as listed in the above table. A MHCP entitles you to 10 appointments per calendar year with the rebate noted above, for each session. After the sixth session, your psychologist will send a brief letter back to the referring GP outlining your progress and requesting a new MHCP for the remaining four sessions. If you have a MHCP you will receive the Medicare rebate 1-2 days after the appointment.

If you have a referral or MHCP, please bring it along to your first appointment Please let your psychologist know if you already have a MHCP which you have used with another psychologist previously, and how many sessions you have used.

Mental Health Care Plans can usually be obtained for the following conditions:

  • Anxiety/Phobias
